WCW Club Season 2010 Games

Alpha Weasel Matt Sundstrom posted our second solo of the year in Game 99, gobbling his 17th and 18th dots as Turkey in 1910. For Matt, it was actually his second solo as Turkey this season, with his first coming in the final round at Weasel Moot. (Tournament games don't count toward league standings.)

The win vaults Matt back into his familiar first-place position in the club standings and also wrests Best Turkey away from Greg Duenow, who had grabbed it in the January 2 game at Matt's.

We can guess how it happened by reviewing the supply center chart, but it's so much more fun to hear from the combatants. Please post your endgame statements in the Comments section. Below.

From Smallest Draw to Largest in Six Days

Just six days after the club's first 17-17 two-way draw, Game 98 finished in a seven-way. Played May 15 at Greg Duenow's apartment in Chicago, the game ended in Spring 1907 with newcomer Justin Pfeil topping as France. The final center counts were:

England (May Ling Chong): 6; 68.57 points.
France (Justin Pfeil): 9; 116.57 points.
Germany (Greg Duenow): 5; 58.57 points.
Italy (Mike Morrison): 2; 28.57 points.

Celebrate 100 Games of Windy City Weasels Diplomacy!

WCW Club Season 2010 Games

The Weasels are turning 100, and we'd like you to be there.

We'll play our 100th game at Guthrie's Tavern on June 10, beginning at 6:15 p.m. As always, the game will end no later than 11 p.m.

The club will provide pizza. We're hoping for three boards, so make your plans to join us. Sign up by posting your name in the Comments below.

O'Kelley and Yeargin Share the Spoils in Game 97

It took 97 games, but we finally saw our first 17-17 split. Game 97, played today at my place in Oak Brook, ended in Spring 1913 in a two-way stalemate-line draw. The final center counts were:

England (Don Glass): 0; 5 points.
France (Jim O'Kelley): 17; 200 points.
Germany (Todd Woodman): 0; 7 points.
Italy (Peter Yeargin): 17; 200 points.

March Madness Concludes with Two Rollicking Boards at Guthrie's

We wrapped up our third annual March Madness extravaganza with two boards last night at Guthrie's Tavern in Wrigleyville. The two boards brought our March total to six, which ties August 2009 for our most active month.

A couple of late cancellations forced us to stretch a bit to field a second board. We only had 12 players, so Michael Martinez and I volunteered to play on both boards. With Guthrie's quick negotiation phases and liquid distractions, this proved incredibly challenging but also a lot of fun, and I think we both played well enough that we didn't skew either game.

Here are the results. I'll rely on the other players to supply the commentary as I missed a lot while playing both boards.

Game 95. The Little Board
Austria (Pete McNamara): 10; 130 points.
England (Chris Paxhia): 6; 70 points.
France (Yuji Takata): 4; 50 points.
Germany (Jim O'Kelley): 6; 70 points.
Italy (Michael Martinez): 6; 70 points.
Russia (John Gramila): 0; 5 points.
Turkey (Josh Kanto); 2; 30 points.
 
A couple of quick comments:
  1. Pete McNamara's 17-month apprenticeship is officially over. He's now a Diplomacy craftsman.
  2. Yuji Takata was playing his first game ever, and he's a quick study. He's also an expert at Settlers of Catan, fyi.
  3. This would have been a great game for Pete under the CODCon Sum of Squares system. He topped and spread the other centers out fairly evenly among the other players. That's what you'll want to do next month.
Game 96. The Big Board
Austria (Matt Sundstrom): 6; 70 points.
England (Jim O'Kelley): 4; 50 points.
France (Adam Berey): 8; 90 points.
Germany (Michael Martinez): 5; 60 points.
Italy (Nathan Cockerill): 0; 6 points.
Russia (Christian MacDonald): 3; 40 points.
Turkey (Peter Yeargin): 8; 90 points.
 
A couple of quick comments:
  1. The last year saw some pretty good scrambling with Adam taking Liverpool and Munich but losing Holland to grow to eight, where he caught Peter who lost two centers.
  2. Matt proved especially slippery in not just staving off elimination but coming back to finish third.
  3. Christian's Russia had three fleets in the North in 1903. Bastard.

O'Kelley, Comstock Top Boards as March Madness Rolls on

Jim O'Kelley and Thom Comstock topped boards 93 and 94, respectively, which were played Saturday at Thom Comstock's home in Oak Park. The event was another banner multi-board session for the Weasels, as we welcomed four new members to the group -- including three beginners -- and welcomed back another. (Plus we collected dues from three more people!)

Game No. 93 ended in Spring 1907 in a six-way DIAS draw. The final center counts were:

Austria (Christian MacDonald): 2; 30 points.
England (Gabe Rohn): 0; 3 points.
France (Dave Martin): 8; 90 points.
Germany (Jim O'Kelley): 10; 130 points.
Italy (Jina Dunn): 5; 60 points.
Russia (Kurt Kugelberg): 3; 40 points.
Turkey (Kevin O'Kelly): 6; 70 points.
 
Dave and Jina were playing for the first time ever, and Kurt was playing for the the first time with the group.
 
Game No. 94 ended in Spring 1908, also in a six-way DIAS draw. The final center counts were:
 
Austria (Christian Kline): 4; 50 points.
England (Thom Comstock): 9; 118 points.
France (Andy Lischett): 8; 90 points.
Germany (Zeke Dunn): 0
Italy (Tony Prokes): 2; 30 points.
Russia (Nick Rohn): 5; 60 points.
Turkey (Matt Sundstrom): 6; 70 points.
 
Zeke was playing for the first time ever. Interestingly, this game featured four of the club's oldest members in Andy and Nick, who both joined the club in Game No. 2, and Christian and Thom, who joined in Game No. 3.
