Insult to injury

WCW Club Season 2012 Games

First, the Detroit Tigers signed Prince Fielder. Then, one of their damn fans topped the board last night in Game No. 168 at Guthrie's Tavern. And in just his second game ever.

Kevin Schiferle kept predicting an imminent comeuppance as he gobbled the East, slowly at first and then in large chunks. The time limit came first, however, leaving Schiferle atop the board with 13 centers.

Normally, I'd attack a guy wearing a Detroit Tigers hat on principle alone, but he was Turkey to my England, and I had other problems to deal with, which I did about as ineffectively as possible. The supply center chart will confirm that, once I get it back. I forgot it at Guthrie's last night.

Anyway, we managed seven years. The final center counts were:

Austria (Sam Bassett): 0; 0.000 points.
England (Jim O'Kelley): 0; 0.000 points.
France (Matt Sundstrom): 1; 0.275 points.
Germany (Peter Lokken): 12; 39.560 points.
Italy (Mike Morrison): 7; 13.462 points.
Russia (John Gramila): 1; 0.275 points.
Turkey (Kevin Schiferle): 13; 46.429 points.

The strong performances by Schiferle and Lokken, respectively, spoiled the long-awaited return to the table for Sam Bassett and Matt Sundstrom, both once-and-hopefully-future regulars. For Lokken, meanwhile, the game was a good tune-up for WAC this weekend. He has to be feeling pretty good about himself as he travels to his first tournament, though perhaps not as good as he'd feel if he had topped the board. He'll have to wait another day to add to his impressive total of board tops.

As for Schiferle, we'll keep an eye on him. His sports loyalties are questionable, but clearly the young man's appetite for supply centers rivals Fielder's appetite for donuts.

Watch for more game announcements, coming as soon as Monday. See you over a board soon.

Update: Finally got my hands on the supply center chart. Here it is.

Remember that guy who would pop into your room at school and say, "Do you guys want to party?"

And you and your roommate would say, "No, man, we're studying*."

And then he'd look at you with a mixture of puzzlement and disgust and say, "Dudes. It's Wednesday."

There were a ton of those guys at Guthrie's last night. The place was packed. And probably any one of them could have played better than I did. So, for once, I'll keep my endgame statement brief and close with these four words: "Don't limit your options."

* In fairness, I almost never uttered these words in college.

WindyCityWeasel: He's faking it though. He's on board 2; I'm on board 1, making bad choices as Turkey.
