THE WEEKLY WEASEL PREPS FOR PYLE

Election email going out this evening, 3 days til college football, 4 days til we strike the regimental, 5 days til celebration of Labor. It’s a great week to be a Weasel.

COME NOW WEASELS…
Our club’s most revered tradition, the Weasel Pyle, is this Sunday at Casa O’Kelley. We have 22 24 players signed up, including a sizeable Old Guard Contingent. Come play Diplomacy -- the fun starts at 11, but if we have 6 willing players at 320ish, your writer will actually get to play in the late game. Awards to follow.

START YOUR SCHEMING…
Oh, you thought that was all on Pyle? Like this edition of THE WEEKLY WEASEL would talk about Pyle without setting up the metagame scenario to get into Weasel Royale.

Top 4 spots are pretty much locked. Weasel of the Year is LIKELY current leader (and reigning WOY) Brandon Fogel. Perennial bridesmaid Jake Trotta would need to drop a 70 in the hypothetical late game to overcome the BTOAB. Fourth place Mick Johnson could catch BTOAB with a solo. Third place Jim O’Kelley can’t, even with a solo, because his second score is too low.

BUT the race for the final three spots is crazy tight, with 9 in the mix for 3 spots. Table with approximate math? Table with approximate math.

(Note: 8th place finisher Zane Blanton literally moved to Ruhr, so he’s unlikely to compete at Pyle; 12th place Ted McClelland and 15th place Nicole Campbell are vacationing in Galicia and Armenia, respectively.)

Christian, Matt, and Brian can reach with just an ordinary lone board top.  Josh, the 2013 Royale champion, can make it with a moderate board top.  Gus and John need a sizable board top, the kind that can definitely happen at the Pyle. Everyone else is within range with a monster score.

Happy hunting!

CAN’T YOU SEE THEIR DAGGERS GLEAMING!
The 2017 Brawl series concluded last month, which means the lineup is set. Seems like a good place for a rundown. Table with storylines? Table with storylines.

Fast Facts

1

Brandon Fogel

BTOAB. Last year’s top seed. Could this be his first year-end trophy?

2

Jake Trotta

Defending Brawl Star. Can’t play Wed next year. Can he catch Clockwork Chris?

3

Jim O’Kelley

2013 champ, 2016 runner up. Can he continue building on CODCON momentum?

4

Ali Adib

2015 top seed and runner up. Will he claim his first title?

5

Christian Kline

OG Weasel of the Year, yet to hoist a playoff trophy. Hardest hitting shark here.

6

Bryan Pravel

2nd year saw him top in 5 different countries. But really don’t give him Russia.

7

Chris Kelly

Clockwork Chris is the ONLY repeat Brawl Star.

FLEETS AND ARMIES STILL PROCEEDIIIIIIIING
Oh, we had a pair of games a couple weeks back. The aforementioned Bryan Pravel glided along a quality German board top, securing 34 points and a likely spot at the Royale. Some brilliance from the WEASTATS department: all of Pravel’s 5 tops or splits have come within the 26-34 point range.

Jake Trotta celebrated his birthday with a 13-center, 59 point English effort, the best England so far this season. That slides him ahead of BTOABrandon Fogel in the unofficial Top Weasel race and narrowed the Weasel of the Year gap to 10... but since Jake's second and third scores are both 59, he would need a 70 to pass the BTOAB.

Love this article. Love the stats. You are the Ken Pomeroy of the Windy City Weasels.

Word of warning to those who would rely exclusively on the above stats while plotting their games tomorrow: It looks to me like Jake is basing the third scores on the WDD page that shows each player's best score for each country. At least one of the above players has a composite package that includes a second-best score with a country.
