Finally, a place where Jim can talk and we can ignore him. Today, the Internet feels just a little bit safer.

A Light Goes Out but the Game Continues

The War Weasel Has Spoken

The creator of our hobby Allan B. Calhamer passed away this week and so our founder has moved on to a better place with more supply centers available. I first met Allan in the 2000 World tournament in Delaware. The game ended in a 5 way draw that I wasn't a part of though I survived with a 3 center Austria. Allan explained many facets of the game to us during the negotiations and after the game.  He was free with his knowledge and generous with his time. I first played the Diplomacy 20 years ago as a boy and it has taken many place and made me many friends along the way. I am glad to have learned it and forever grateful to Allan for his contribution to the world of gaming.

The Windy City Weasels were honored to have him at our first Worlds and are thankful for our final chance to thank the creator of Diplomacy. Though it is sad that he is gone let us remember him by spreading the game of Diplomacy. I challenge you, fellow Weasels to take some time this year to pass on this game that we love. I also ask you remember that it's just that as well a game. A game to be played for fun with friends or friends to be made or stabbed. As we head into National Diplomacy month let's fill these games, make them exciting, and for God's sake let's have some fun while doing it! I think Allan would've wanted it that way.

The War Weasel Wants You!

The War Weasel Has Spoken

Fellow Weasels,

Yesterday at Jim O'Kelley's home we had our second game of the season. Yours truly held on the entire game to end with a one center Italy or what Peter Yeargin affectionately refers to as a "one dot moron".

But back to the matter at hand , recruiting new players for the club. We've had a slow go so far this season due to losing some core players to new jobs , movings and life in general. Every organization goes through growing pains  and this the 8th season of the Windy City Weasels is no exception. We're the most active and the greatest Diplomacy Club in the World and if, no not if , but when we host the World Diplomacy Championship again in four years we will need new active members so please join me at the Bring-a-Friend game next month. http://www.meetup.com/wcwdiplomacy/events/86935702/

Mission Accomplished!

The War Weasel Has Spoken

The Great Pacific Northwest Blood Feud is over. Phew.

To be sure, there were anxious moments last weekend between our Weasels and the Pacific Northwest delegation to Weasel Moot, which included Alex Maslow of Alaska, whose CODCon trip last spring paved the way to peace; Matt Shields of Portland; Nathan Barnes and Eric Mead of Seattle; and Weasel ex-pat Christian MacDonald, now also of Seattle. Tensions nearly boiled over during Thursday evening's social when the Seattle crew bombed me not once but twice.

Fortunately, we kept talking and cool heads prevailed. We pledged to send a delegation to WACCon in January, and they promised to return for next year's WDC.

As your War Weasel, I now declare this blood feud to be over.

A case of the midgame shakeouts

The War Weasel Has Spoken

Preface: I originally intended to write this as a private message to Ted McClelland, but the empathetic reaction by the other players to his lament in Game No. 110 convinced me that it would be a good subject for this blog, so here it is. I hope you find it helpful.

The alliance fell apart in 1904. Up to that point, Ted McClelland’s Austria had worked earnestly with John Gramila in Italy and Christian Kline in Russia to destroy me. However, through the first three years, Ted had gained the only center—Bulgaria in 1902.

Help Kevin O'Kelly meet his fundraising goal for Juvenile Diabetes!

The War Weasel Has Spoken

As Diplomacy players, we're always jumping at opportunities to screw each other over. Off the board, we're equally eager to help each other out.

When Ted McClelland publishes a book about young Mr. Obama, we  buy it. When Matt Sundstrom's band plays a fest, we go. When Nate Cockerill does standup, we'll watch...if he ever tells us about it.

On Sunday, Kevin O'Kelly is walking to cure Diabetes. Many of you may not know that he's lived with Diabetes for 25 years. His fundraising goal is $1,500, and as of today, he's $365 short. If you're able, please take a moment to visit his fundraising website and make a donation. Any amount will help.

Next time we're on a board with Kevin, we'll jump at the chance to stab the crap out of him. Today, we have an opportunity to support him. We should jump at that chance, too.

Hat Night a hit!

The War Weasel Has Spoken

At least half of this evening's 28 players got into the spirit of hat night. As we look around the room, we see a Brit in a cowboy hat, Eric Brown in his trademark pith helmet, Nate Cockerill wearing a red pepper, Jon Hill in a neon green witch's hat, Alex Amann in the rainbow pimp hat that he stole from me last year at Husky, and much, much more.

I'm looking forward to seeing the team names for tomorrow's team round. I'll try to share them with you.

The things I do for you

The War Weasel Has Spoken

At the Sox game last night, I got a voice mail from my sister, the actress, followed by an urgent text message: Call me as soon as you can!" I called as soon as I got home. (I left the game in disgust after the seventh inning.)

"Hey," Tricia said, on answering the phone. "I have a great offer for you, but
